GM, threatened by Toyota, vows to ‘fight for every sale’

General Motors boss Rick Wagoner insists the US company will not give up its
position as the world’s top automaker without a fight.
Speaking ahead of this weekend’s press opening of the North American
International Auto Show, the GM chairman and chief executive said he was
well aware of the seemingly unstoppable threat posed by Japan’s Toyota.

"I like being number one, and I think our people take pride in it. So it’s
not something we’re going to sit back and let somebody else pass us,"
Wagoner told reporters on Friday.

"We’re going to have to fight for every sale and do it in way that is
consistent with building the enterprise," he said.

"If as a result of that we get passed, it won’t be a happy day for me. But
I’ve lost basketball games before, and as a result of that you get ready,
you learn and go back and play the next day," said Wagoner, who played
college basketball at North Carolina’s Duke University in the early 1970s.

"We’re going to fight to keep the position, and if we lose, we’re going to
fight to get it back."

Last month, Toyota said it planned to make 9.42 million vehicles worldwide
this year. That would exceed the 9.18 million GM expected to have made in
2006.

This year, GM’s production looks likely to fall with the company, like its
Detroit rival Ford, laying off thousands of workers and shuttering plants.

3800 V6 – What is this?

I have a 98 Park Avenue with 55K miles on it. Because of the infamous intake
manifold leak associated with these engines I keep a close eye on it for
coolant leaks.
Today while I was inspecting my engine compartment I noticed a small metal
cover about four inches long and about two inches high with two 8mm bolts
through it on the rear end of the intake manifold directly below the area
where the metal EGR hose enters the intake manifold. There seems to be some
seepage around it and the substance appears to be oil. Can anyone tell me
what this thing is and whether it part of the intake manifold leakage
problem.
Thanks.

Wheel balance weights

I have a 2006 Lucerne with the 10 spoke chrome plated wheels.

The balancing weights appear to be attached in some way other than the usual
"clinching" method I’m used to seeing.  Eight some great adhesive or welded?
They are visible through the openings and located on the inside of the
wheel.

When it comes time for balancing or new tires are there only limited places
that can redo the weights in this manner?

1995 Chevy Lumina 3.1 Stalls and does not start anymore

I was driving this car and all of a sudden, it surges kind of like it
putters where it dies and then it goes and then dies (I am getting
whiplash doing this). Eventually it dies at a stop usually then it
takes a couple of starts after holding down the gas pedal then go into
gear.(My head snaps back usually). Today, it finally decided it did not
want to start up at all. Its not getting gas at all it seems and I hear
like a loud thud come from the exhaust as it blows through. Any ideas
what can be causing this?
