1999 Grand Prix Tranny Problem

First of all, a big thanks to all who helped me out with my previous problems. There all are OK now, with the exception of one small problem.

When I get in the car and drive off, it changes gears as smooth as a baby’s rear end. After about 15 minutes, the changing starts to cluck just a little. It’s not a big noise but one that you notice.

If anyone has any ideas and suggestion I would appreciate them. If there is some place to look, could you also tell me where it is physically located? Looking under the hood for wiring or sensors on this car is no easy task.

Thanks.

Antique Brake shoes worth anything? 15-30years old.

I have several pairs of brake shoes that are 15-30 years old (but never
used).   Are they worth anything since I don’t know which vehicle they fit?

86 Cavalier High idle

Hello, I have an ’86 Cavalier with a 2.0. It idles high when started
and doesn’t idle down. It seems to idle even faster when it’s warmed
up. We’ve changed the computer and throttle position sensor. Still no
luck.I thought it might be a vacuum leak somewhere or a bad sensor that
we haven’t checked or replaced yet.  Any ideas?

TIA!

Ongoing refinement of the 3100/3400 intake gasket

Just had to replace a 3400 engine in a 2004 Venture
van.  While doing so, we noticed that the intake gasket
is a new part number and design.  Here are some pictures
that kind of highlight the differences for those that are
interested in the whole intake gasket fiasco.

First, here is a picture of the old gasket side by side
with the "improved" gasket that came out sometime
last year.

http://members.shaw.ca/ianrmac/Images/intake%20(1).JPG

Main difference is the two metal pellets in the gasket to allow
for greater torque on the gasket without deforming it.

Here is a closer view of the "improved" gasket at the water
port section.  Note how the imbedded rubber gasket is a
single piece design around the port.

http://members.shaw.ca/ianrmac/Images/intake%20(2).JPG

Now, here is a picture of the 2004 design gasket.  You can
see that it has one imbedded rubber gasket that goes around
the inside section of the water port, and then a completely
separate stand alone imbedded gasket that goes around the
water port.  I like this, don’t know how good it will work, but
it appears that they are trying to keep the coolant from leaking
to the inside of the engine.  Even if the gasket around the port
fails, the other gasket should keep the coolant from leaking
inward.

Oh yeah, the intake ports are a spiffy green color now.  Probably
simply to aid in identification.

1991 Caprice slower than 1985. Why ?

I test drove a 91 Caprice with a 305 engine and TBI.  I was "dismayed" to
find it had poor acceleration compared to my 85 Caprice with a 305, and a carb.

Does TBI ruin the acceleration ?  Is there some reason a 91 would be slower
than an 85 with the same engine size, or was this particular 91 just messed up?
The owner said it only had 129,000 miles on it.

Thanks,

L

Paintless dent repair – your thoughts.

How difficult is it to learn this?  I want to fix an old car of mine that
was damaged, but don’t want to pay a lot for it.  Some of the PDR shops are
getting quite expensive.  Where do you get the tools and training without
going to a class?  Are my expectations reasonable or not?

?-Rear wheel bearing replacement on an '88 Buick LeSabre?

Hi all,

I’ve got a bad driver’s side (LHD) rear wheel bearing on a 1988 Buick LeSabre.

There is quite the axial play, and you can hear it groan.

It appears to me that this is a hub assembly, but I didn’t remove the wheel to
investigate.

I’m well equipped to do most work (shop press, bearing separators, air, etc…).  I’ve
just sold this car, and I want to change the wheel bearing for the new owner.

How easy does this assembly come apart (non ABS).  Any info about the procedure would be
appreciated.  I’m quite used to doing wheel bearings on Fiat X1/9s, which are a press in
sealed for life setup, with a threaded retainer ring all housed in the pillar.

Thanks! ;)
